The Puzzler

Puzzler Answer: A Very Intriguing Transaction

RAY: Last week's puzzler was from "my guy goes into a convenience store series." The kernel of this was sent in by a listener named Peter Brigham.

A fellow goes into a convenience store to buy a couple of things. He buys like a package of razor blades and shaving cream, a candy bar and a bottle of Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil, all of which he puts on the counter. The clerk brings up his total and it comes to $13.59. The fellow opens his wallet and finds a buck. He says, "Aw man, oh wait a minute. I have an emergency $50 tucked in my wallet." He apologizes to the clerk and says, "Look at, this is all I have so I have to give you this fifty-dollar bill."

He hands the clerk the fifty, the clerk gives him his change and as he does so, the clerk says, "Hah, that's interesting."

And the customer says, "Jeez, it is."

The question is, what was interesting?

TOM: I remember my first reaction was that the change that he got was some permutation of thirteen fifty-nine which is what he spent.

RAY: No. It was the change. And what's interesting is he gets a 20, a 10, a five, a one, a quarter, a dime, a nickel and a penny. There are eight little things in the cash register. He gets from each.

TOM: Yeah. One of everything.

RAY: One of everything. Get out. Who's our winner?

TOM: Jeez, that's good. The winner is Heather Jones from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
